Aging And Anti-Aging -The Fact And Fiction...

By Graham Waite

The process of aging starts almost the second you take your first breath as a new born baby your body experiences constant change during the phases of development to adulthood. What may surprise you is that as early as young adolescence the body is already experience what are called senescence or beginning to age.

Almost before you have passed childhood your body is already beginning to age. Initially these changes will be so subtle they will be barely noticeable but they are start of the body slowly aging.

Your musculoskeletal system is the first part of your body to show signs of aging and is usually the first place to be effected by illness and disease usually associated with getting older. This is why after age 35 you should take precautions to reduce the risk of injury or disease as your body’s ability to repair lessens as it starts to age more rapidly.

By avoiding exposing your body to excessive alcohol consumption the use of hard and soft drugs and not smoking you reduce the risks to your body in later life. Additionally taking care not to have accidents and living a healthy wholesome life, eating a well balanced diet and keeping up a good exercise regimen will all have significant benefits.

Keeping your doctor aware of any early changes in your well being is important as you get older and I encourage regular medical check ups as a good idea for most people. Make sure when discussing your health you make your doctors fully aware of any known family health issues so that preventative measures can be put in place early to prevent premature aging or worse. Part of the body starting to age will be the effectiveness of the eyes and other sensory organs. Around 35 -40 it is quite common for you to notice that your close up vision is not as good as it once was and you may require assistance to read close up. This is a condition known as presbyopia.

We should not be shocked at the number of people under 35 who need to wear aids for their vision either contact lenses (the choice of many) and glasses. By the time you get to age 40 there is around a one in five chance you will be wearing glasses or contact lenses. Currently around 90 million people over 40 suffer from presbyopia in the US today- a figure which is increasing year on year.

Many people as they grow older lose to some degree their hearing. In some instances, you may go deaf around age 40 and onwards. This condition is called presbycusis, which is another sign of aging. You might find because of this music you once enjoyed now becomes to harsh or even unpleasant to listen to. Previously you might have enjoyed a good rock concert but now you find the sound you once loved too much for your ears to cope with or if one time you’d visit a night club and your ears used to ring when you left but then stop in a few minutes but now you find it takes several hours. You might even find conversations hard to listen to especially if there is a lot of background noise.

As the hearing is weakened, you will start to hear speech differently. For instance, the use of K may sound distorted, which affects comprehension and understanding. In other words, a older person may hear the CH in a word, such as Chute Up, and think that someone is telling them to shut-up.

The CH sounds different. It is possible to help people with hearing problems or partial deafness in a number of ways by using hearing aids or other assistive listening devices. In addition it helps to face the person you are talking to and maybe use body language or hand gestures to assist in any explanation or conversation. Also speak clearly and more slowly. These are all signs of natural healthy aging, yet in some aging signs are less natural. For instance, if you unfortunate enough to contract lung cancer because of a history of smoking, or being around second-hand smoke, then the cause is not what nature intended.

As your body continues to age and approaches 40 years or so it is common for your body weight to increase. This is very common where families have a background of poor diet and a history of family weight problems. This is because the body stores more fat around 30% and needs less energy. On top of that wrinkles start becoming visible and other previously unnoticeable signs of aging start to show.
