Are You Forgetful?
By Amy Sherman, LMHC
While many baby boomers complain that they are becoming more
and more forgetful, for most of us, it is a common condition
of aging. Our ability to concentrate gradually reduces with
age and we therefore don't pay attention to what we are doing,
hearing or seeing.
Of course, most boomers are concerned about getting Alzheimer's
disease or other forms of dementia. In fact, fifty percent of
people in their 80's will experience some cognitive impairment
and Alzheimer's is often over-diagnosed as the culprit.
There are many reasons why we forget. Here is a list of some
causes discussed on WebMD:
1. Mental decline may be due to drug interactions. Always advise your doctor of any medications or treatments you are using, including vitamins, herbal remedies and over-the-counter drugs.
2. If you are overly tired due to your busy lifestyle and lack
of sleep, you can expect to have some "senior moments". If,
however, you are run-down and lethargic, it could indicate a
more serious medical condition, which should be checkout out.
3. Difficulty concentrating can be associated with both physical and psychological problems. Depression, anxiety disorders, drug and alcohol use, ADHD, menopause, etc. can affect memory and cause forgetfulness.
4. A stroke, seizures, diabetes and many autoimmune diseases
could be the cause of some memory problems.
Before you think you have dementia, remember to slow down,
breathe and take a good look around you. The more you register
what you see, hear, and feel, the longer things will stay in your mind. Make time to concentrate on what you are doing. Play
mnemonic games to trigger names of people, phone numbers and
shopping lists. Sometimes you may be forgetful, but don't worry
about it. As Red Skelton once said, "There are three signs of
getting older. Loss of memory and I forget the other two."
