What Baby Boomers Worry About
By Amy Sherman, LMHC
We all experience problems and worry about how we're going to get through them. However, when worry becomes excessive it can distort your thinking and make things worse than they ever were.
Take a look at some of the things you probably worry about. I'm sure your
personal finances
are a big concern. Could you take that long
deserved vacation
you've been saving for? How much can you put away for the grandchildren's college fund? Should you continue shopping for birthdays, holidays and other special occasions? Can you care for your pet's health, in spite of
high veterinary costs?
Can your nest egg cover long-term health care if you should need it?
Here are some other concerns baby boomers face and think about:
1. Medicare's future
2. Memory loss/Alzheimer's Disease
3. Caring for their
aging parents
4. Social Security benefits lasting
5. When to stop working and officially retire
The concerns can go on and on. Obviously, they should not
be ignored and should be addressed, one-by-one, in a systematic, structured way. In this way you prepare for your future and the future of those closest to you.
Decide which of these concerns is most pressing. Is it finding a safe, healthy placement for your aging parent? Is it your job security over the next few years? Perhaps you're ready to
launch a new career.
Wouldn't you first research all your options? That's how you approach your worries. Research what you can so you feel knowledgeable enough to make the best decision. Then take action. Worry does not make things better. All it does is
take away the pleasure you have today.
