Finding a Cheap International Airline Ticket Online

By Ian J Stevenson

It is possible to find a cheap international airline ticket online, but before committing to this route, the alternatives should also be considered:

• Travel agents often know of bargains not advertised to the public. It is true that they make a commission for their services, but the discount that they receive from the airline may still make their price the winner. It is also convenient, as they take care of the paperwork, and handle all the arrangements.

• The airlines' own websites should be checked out. Sometimes, if sales are slow for a particular flight, they will sell off the remaining seats at a bargain fare. The regularly advertised rates also give a good standard for comparison when shopping around.

• Check newspaper ads. They provide a quick idea of what is available. Once you decide to go online, be prepared to spend some time shopping around. Many sites offer cheap tickets, and deciding where the real bargains are takes perseverance. Some points to consider are:

• What is included in the fare? Some online fares are all-inclusive, while others don't include taxes, fees or surcharges in the advertised price. These add-ons can mean a difference of hundreds of dollars.

• Travel insurance is always a wise choice for pricey international trips. The policy usually has to be taken out within a day or two of booking, and it makes sense to purchase it along with the ticket. Compare the cost between different vendors. A cheap fare may be offset by overpriced insurance.

• What is the reputation of the website? Have they been around for years, or have they just appeared on the scene? The well-known players, such as expedia.com, travelocity.com, selloffvactions.com or itravel2000.com may not have the cheapest prices, but do offer more security.

• Is the site registered as a travel agency in your state or province? This could mean the difference between a refund and losing your money if any of the companies you are dealing with fail.

• Online ticket purchase means payment in full at the time of booking. Don't make the commitment until you are sure this is what you want. Read and understand the small print, it is important to know what your rights are once the credit card has been billed.

• Does the company have a toll-free number that can be accessed in all the countries you will be visiting? How much, if any, help do they offer if there are problems with your travel arrangements?

• Can you book other services, such as, hotels, tours and transfers through them?

While it is possible to find a cheap international airline ticket online, be willing to devote time to careful shopping, and don't rule out the alternatives.
