Keeping-Your-Mind-Young

By Wendy Wood

Aging is just a natural part of life that most people dread due to the changes it brings. However, there are some natural methods that can be incorporated to keep yourself healthy, strong and feeling young. While most people focus on treating the physical signs of aging, there are other parts of the body that should be treated too.

Your mind is one such body part. One of the noticeable side effects of aging, but isn't able to be "seen" physically, is memory loss. When people begin to forget things that used to be easy to remember, they can suffer from confusion, emotional stress and frustration. Therefore, it's wise to find daily exercises that help your mind stay sharp. Below are some suggestions:

Games

One of the first games young kids are introduced to is "The Memory Game." This is the game where there are about 50 cards that have 25 pictures on them...meaning there are 25 pairs. You then mix the cards up and place them in rows upside-down. Then, each player takes turns flipping over two cards trying to get a match. The game makes players use their memory to remember where the matching cards are. At the end of the game, the player with the most pairs wins. This game is great for both children and adults because it keeps the memory working. There are other games that keep your mind working like crossword puzzles and Sudoku.

Voice Completed Tasks

Perhaps, you've recently began to notice you're forgetting whether or not you've completed various tasks. Or, you go into a room for something but forget what you went in there for? This is natural as we age, but you can naturally help reduce the frequency in which it occurs. To do this, when you complete a task, make a mental note of it by saying it out loud. This will help your brain remember because not only did you do it, but you made an actual statement that was heard and processed by your brain.

Rest

Sleep is essential for our bodies and numerous studies have shown that we need at least 8 hours of sleep a night. However, many people have busy lives and very rarely get this amount of sleep. This can affect your mood, as well as, your memory. Therefore, if you don't get the amount of sleep you should at night, try taking a short 30 minute nap. Your system will be revitalized and your energy and production levels will get the boost they need.

Improve Your Mood

Another way to naturally fight the signs and symptoms of aging is to find ways to improve your mood. It has been shown that when people are doing things they enjoy, the brain releases serotonin, which improves moods and also promotes relaxation. When you are happy and relaxed, the daily pressures of life don't seem to be so "big" any longer. Therefore, if you enjoy listening to music, taking baths, getting massages or eating chocolate - allow time to enjoy these activities in small intervals throughout the week.

Above are our natural methods that will help you keep your body and mind young. However, there are sure to be more natural methods that will ward off the side effects of aging and help you remain healthy, fresh and feeling young. Just remember that it's okay to take time out for yourself every day, especially if you are working to improve your overall mental and/or physical health.
