Saving For a Sunny Day
By Amy Sherman, LMHC
We've all heard how important it is to put "something away for a rainy day." I agree, but let's not just save and prepare for when the worst will happen. Let's also plan for the good times.
What about the vacation you want to take, or the car you'd like to buy? How about securing money for your children or grandchildren's future?
It's nice to brace yourself for the emergency that may or may not happen, but it's also a good idea to plan for the good times that keep life worth living.
The purpose of all this is to remember to be forward thinking. Life is not all about working, cooking, cleaning and doing those on-going responsibilities that must be done. Life is about seeking out pleasurable things you can plan for. Think of it as your Sunny Day Fund, which allows you to take some time off to spend with your family and friends.
Therefore, you're not saving for something with a negative
projection. You are saving to meet your most desirous wishes. Your Sunny Day Fund could literally be a fund that you set aside for vacations, luxuries, etc. or it can be a time period you set aside to do fun things for sheer enjoyment. In other words, it doesn't have to be just about material things. For those of you who want to set up a fund for money and are not disciplined enough to regularly save, you may want to join Vacation or Christmas Clubs at your bank, if that would help.
Your first step to creating your Sunny Day Fund is to set some goals. Part of the enjoyment is planning what you want to do and when you want to do it. Wherever you live, you can plan specials outings. Many of these don't have to be expensive and most everything you do outside is free.
Take your focus away from saving for a rainy day to saving for a sunny day, and you'll find that nothing is more wonderful than the joy of sunshine. Why live your life expecting "rainy days and cloudy skies" when you can practice this refreshing new concept of preparing your life for fun and frivolity? If you're too busy to enjoy life, you're just too busy!
