Boomer Story : Vardit's Story

I am adding a new boomer story to my series of Baby Boomers Stories about overcoming challenges and coming back even stronger than ever. Here is the inspirational story of Vardit in her own words:

If anyone had told me that in less than a year's time, I would be telling you about me in my own website, that I created, I would have laughed in their face. Truth really is stranger than fiction.

Hi, my name is Vardit, and I'm a baby boomer born in 1951. The subject of health has been a passion of mine for many years. It began when, in my mid-twenties, I realized that I had to do something to improve my health. Throughout high school and college I had gone through a cycle of dieting and binging caused by low self esteem and a poor body image. My attitude towards myself was unforgiving until I finally realized that I had to start learning to accept myself and start adapting a healthier lifestyle.

I read a countless books on self improvement, searching for a way to feel better about myself. I did everything I could think of including going to a psychologist for a time in an effort to learn to cope with my issues. I exercised everyday and improved my eating habits. It wasn't easy, but a change came slowly over the years and I honestly began to feel healthier both physically and mentally.

In my late 30's I felt that I was finally in control. Life was looking good. I had the support of a loving understanding husband, and 2 beautiful sons who kept me very busy. But my thirst for knowledge never stopped. I was always researching and collecting information on health issues that were relevant to me or my family. I read and took courses in traditional and alternative medicine to enhance my knowledge and understanding of the human body and mind.

As I neared 50, signs of menopause began to appear. My body was changing and I looked for ways to make the transition. I had to accept the fact that I needed eyeglasses after having 20/20 vision all my life. I started writing myself notes so I wouldn't forget things. Certain foods became difficult to digest. I began waking up nights. I realized that if I wanted to stay healthy and vital I was going to have to make some changes in my habits and attitude. This also meant accepting things I couldn't change.

What bothered me most about aging, was its affect on my cognitive abilities; my thinking was not as clear and my memory was getting worse. I read that stimulating the mind could improve brain fitness and that is what eventually led me to begin this website.
