The Most Common Hysterectomy Complications
By Dr. Nelly Stoyanova
The most common hysterectomy complications are surgery related.
There are three types of surgical approaches to hysterectomies:
A. Vaginal method
The vaginal hysterectomy is done through the vagina instead of opening the abdomen. The complications in this procedure could be: infection and bladder injuries
B. Abdominal method
The abdominal hysterectomy is the most commonly used method. It is performed through an incision in the abdomen.
The complications in this procedure could be: adhesions to other organs, bowel injury, bladder injury, bleeding, and discomfort during sex due to surgically shortened vagina.
C. Laparoscopic - assisted vaginal hysterectomy
This method involves a small abdominal incision to insert the laparoscope. It is a relatively new method and is not appropriate for all types of hysterectomies.
The most common hysterectomy complications in this procedure could be: hemorrhage, if the arteries are not properly secured.
