Retirement Stress and Health

By Dr. Nelly Stoyanova

Retirement stress and health are very much interconnected with emotions and finances.

Sex drive

This is a delicate matter that is closely related to the amount of stress in your life. Stress is known to suppress libido. On the other hand, the fact that you are having trouble in bed is stressful enough to make the situation worse. Basically libido is about blood circulation. A healthy heart provides good blood circulation.

Big belly is not good for your heart AND for your sex life.

Besides, the midsection fat reduces the level of testosterone. Isn’t this reason enough for any man to take care of his belly?

Factors that contribute to the decline in libido are various: chronic illness, disability, chronic pain, hormonal problems, medications (antidepressants in particular), and some foods. Poor health is a major source of stress and often leads to early retirement. Given the fact that baby boomers are not entitled to medicare after the age of 65, health problems can represent a financial challenge especially among low income retirees.

Recent data shows that low income retired people (below $ 23,000) have a higher number of conditions and are generally in poorer health than their counterparts whose income is in the 60 or 70 K.

In addition to their declining health, people who retire earlier because of poor health or become sick after they retire may not be able to consider a career change or find a supplementary income.

Illness and death

This is never a fun topic to discuss (some of us prefer to not even think about it) but it still affects our stress level.
