How Toxins Can Make You Gain Weight

By Dr. Nelly Stoyanova

How could toxins possibly make you fat?

Here is how!

While there is no doubt that environmental hazards can cause some forms of cancer, immune disorders or even neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson disease, there is little written about the risk for obesity.

For example, the so called xeno-estrogens (or phytoestrogens) play the role of foreign estrogens, messing up the hormonal system and have been incriminated in obesity, cancer in females, and prostate diseases in males. Read more about the risk of low fat diet for men. What kind of toxins can make you gain weight and how does it happen?

Origin:

I. Environment(air, water and food):

1. Chemicals used in agriculture: Pesticides, herbicides and fungicides

2. Heavy metals (lead, mercury, aluminum)

3. Air pollution

4. Volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, toluene

5. Exogenous hormones and antibiotics found in animal products

6. Active and passive smoking

7. Alcohol

8. Medications (e.g. some antidepressants)

9. Botulin toxins in processed food cans

10. Drinking water (even bottled water in plastic containers that eliminate toxic ingredients)

Anything from the environment can be harmful for the body at any given moment thus putting the body in a stress mode. The result is "The big belly syndrome".

Men over 50: Be aware of low fat food and soy products that play the role of foreign estrogens. This can further lower your testosterone level and I am sure you don’t want to do this. Does it make sense to you to take testosterone pills or patches and eat some food that is totally killing the effect of your expensive rejuvenating treatment?

II. Internal toxins (from our own body):

Those are the end products of normal body metabolism. The body has its own elimination system that involves the gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys, and skin.

The gastro-intestinal tract is using a well balanced microbial flora. The problems arise when the balance goes out of control after excessive use of alcohol, antibiotics or even chlorinated water. Irregular bowel movement does not help either.

The liver transforms fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble that are eliminated by the kidneys, or excreted through the bile in the bowels. Any condition that affects the liver (for example chronic alcohol abuse) or the kidney (heavy metals) would decrease the detoxification potential of the body.

Some toxins are eliminated through the skin through sweat. By clogging the skin pores with oily substances one can prevent the skin from eliminating substances. The same goes for the excessive use of anti-perspirants or over heating the body.

As you noticed, body detoxification is a complex procedure that requires excellent functions of multiple organs: kidney, liver, bowels, skin and even tears and saliva.
