Vacation Checklist Comes Handy When You Plan Your Vacation
By Dr. Nelly Stoyanova
I compiled a vacation checklist of “must do” and “have to do” that my friends ask me to email them before every trip. It is very handy and will help you get ready. You can use it as a starting point, and then mark it up as you see fit. The list is divided into 3 sections:
I. Planning
II. Preparation
III. Double check as you are leaving
It does not matter what kind of traveler you are- a light packer or the one that brings 2 suitcases on a day trip (yes- I have a friend who does this all the time) you still need an absolute minimum of things to have packed with you and to make sure you have done before you turn the door key on your way out.
I. Vacation checklist: Planning
It all starts with information gathering, right? Get the most current and reliable information about where you are going:
1. Maps/Driving directions
2. Airline/bus/train schedule
3. Rent-a-car options/availability
Check your auto insurance to see if you're fully covered where you're going. You may not need that supplemental insurance offered by the rental company.
4. Entertainment/ Things to do/Places to see once you get there
5. Use other people’s experience to get good tips
6. US Government State Department Advisories
II. Vacation checklist: Preparation
You have selected the destination for your dream vacation. Now you need to get ready.
1. Get tickets and hotel reservations
2. Make sure you have your passport if you plan on leaving the US.
3. Renew passport or obtain passport if needed.
4. Get additional immunizations if needed.
Going abroad? Check if your destination warrants any shots.
5. House care
If you don’t have a house sitter, ask a neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your home and to pick up your mail. Leave some lights on to deter burglars.
If you are leaving for a long period of time:
Arrange to have the lawn cut
Stop the mail
6. At the office:
Update voicemail at work with absence notification and email with auto reply absence notification
7. Pet care
Arrange for pet care or boarding (be sure pets have any necessary shots). If you are traveling with your pet check what the period of mandatory pet quarantine is in the country you are heading to. It might be longer than your stay period.
8. Bills:
Pay upcoming bills that can’t wait or set online payments that use automatic online payment so you will not miss a credit card payment.
9. Money
Credit card: If a credit card is stolen, you can report it and stop additional charges. If your debit card is stolen, stopping additional charges can freeze your access to cash. Consider using your credit card when away from home. Record phone numbers for reporting lost or stolen credit cards or debit cards and put them in a location other than your purse or wallet.
Traveler's checks: Keep in mind that many places, even some banks, are not accepting traveler's checks.
10. Heading to Europe?
Get an European power converter (220 V) for your hair dryer or buy one there or make sure the hotel is providing one.
11. Language
Put name and destination phone number or destination address in luggage. Don't put the address of your vacant home.
IV. Vacation checklist: Double check as you are leaving
You are ready! Double check:
In your carry-on!
1. Tickets
2. Passport
3. Reservation Confirmation
4. Prescription medicine
Be sure that you will have enough prescription medicine.
5. Reading glasses (have a spare pair). Contact lenses, lens case.
6. Clear bag (s) for money/passport (for the airport)
7. Camera/ipod/book/magazine
Now you are ready. Enjoy your vacation!
